PESA Mahotsav & PESA Act 1996

  • In December 2025, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj celebrated a two-day PESA Mahotsav: Utsav Lok Sanskriti Ka on in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Legislative Framework and Objectives

  • The Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996 extends the provisions of Part IX to the Fifth Schedule areas.
  • It aims to recognize traditional tribal practices and ensure self-governance through the Gram Sabha mechanism.
  • Gram Sabhas are empowered to approve development plans and identify beneficiaries for various welfare schemes.
