In December 2024, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam (BVV), 2024 was enacted and replaced the Aircraft Act, 1934, to modernize India’s aviation sector.
Key Features of the BVA, 2024
- Key regulatory bodies like DGCA, BCAS, and AAIB are retained.
- Licensing authority for Radio Telephone Operator Certificates shifts from the Department of Telecommunications to DGCA.
- Expanded regulatory powers include aircraft design oversight and stricter penalties (up to 2 years imprisonment or Rs. 1 crore fine for violations).
- Government can impose civil/criminal penalties for public health and international convention violations.
