Coral Survey Unveils New Marine Species
A four-year coral reef-associated faunal survey by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has recently uncovered new marine species along Andhra Pradesh’s coast, including India’s first sighting of Entomacrodus thalassinus.
- The survey, conducted along the Visakhapatnam coast, discovered the rare reef fish Entomacrodus thalassinus, previously known only from places like Japan, Sri Lanka, and Australia.
- Entomacrodus thalassinus was found among intertidal rocky reefs near the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour during low tide, marking its first recorded presence in Indian waters.
- The study also documented 13 new sea slugs, 11 previously undocumented fish species, and two new brachyuran crab species on Andhra Pradesh’s coast.
