Formation of Indian National Congress (INC)
The first session of the Indian National Congress (28–30 December 1885) marked the organized beginning of India’s national politics. Convened in Bombay under W.C. Bonnerjee’s presidency and shaped by A.O. Hume’s initiative, it gathered 72 delegates from across regions to debate India’s public grievances and political future.
The session set Congress’s early character—secular, constitutional, and pan-Indian—by outlining aims of national unity, political education, and representative leadership, and by passing resolutions seeking administrative reform and greater Indian participation in governance.
