Gupta Kings: Chandragupta I, Samudragupta & Vikramaditya

The Gupta dynasty was established by Sri Gupta, who probably belonged to the Vaishya caste. He hailed from either Magadha (Bihar) or Prayaga (eastern Uttar Pradesh). His son Ghatotkacha bore the title of Maharaja and appears to have been a small local king about whom little is known.

Chandragupta I (AD 319–334)

  • Chandragupta I is regarded as the real founder of the Gupta Empire.
  • His accession in AD 319 marks the beginning of the Gupta Era, which was used in Gupta and feudatory records thereafter.
  • He adopted the imperial title Maharajadhiraja (“King of Kings”).
