Public Distribution System (PDS)
The Public Distribution System (PDS) is India's largest food security program, distributing essential food and non-food items at highly subsidized prices. Operated jointly by the Central and State governments, it aims to ensure food accessibility for vulnerable sections of society, stabilize food prices, and manage buffer stocks.
Recent Developments
- The PDS, governed by the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, currently covers about two-thirds of India's population.
- This includes up to 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population.
