Social Protection for Gig Workers
India’s Social Security Code 2020 officially recognizes gig and platform workers. The e-Shram portal, launched in 2021, enables their registration, enabling access to benefits like health insurance, pensions, and accident cover under PM-JAY. Nearly 1 crore gig workers have been targeted under recent policy drives.

- NITI Aayog’s report projects India’s gig and platform workforce to exceed 1 crore in 2024–25 and reach 2.35 crore by 2029–30.
- The Code on Social Security, 2020 defines ‘gig workers’ and ‘platform workers’ for the first time in Indian legislation.
