China has launched a robot prototype in April 2021 that can scoop up debris left behind by other spacecraft with a big net.

About Space Debris

  • Natural (meteoroid) and artificial (man-made) particles are both included in space debris. Meteoroids orbit the sun, but the majority of manufactured debris orbits the Earth, and is referred to as orbital debris.
  • Any man-made item in orbit around the Earth that no longer performs a useful role is referred to as orbital trash. Non-functional spacecraft, abandoned launch vehicle stages, mission-related junk, and fragmentation debris are examples of this type of debris.
