Sangtam Tribe

Recently, the apex body of Nagaland’s Sangtam community passed a resolution to protect pangolins, the world’s most trafficked wild mammal, within its jurisdiction.

  • The Sangtam tribe is one of the 16 major tribes of Nagaland.
  • They are concentrated in the Kiphire and Tuensang districts of Nagaland, bordering Myanmar.
  • There are 6 major clans amongst the Sangtams- Dhongrü, Jingrü, Langtidhongrü/ Langkidhongrü, Mungzarü, Anarü/Yingphidhongrü and Rudidhongrü clans.
  • The common dialect of the Sangtams is known as Sangtamyu which is spoken by around 90% of the population.
  • The Sangtam people traditionally practice jhum cultivation (shifting agriculture), which remains central to their livelihood.
