Korku Community
Recently, about 2,000 Korku community members from 150 villages marched in Madhya Pradesh demanding removal of forest encroachments and protection of livelihoods.
- The Korku are an ancient, peaceful Adivasi community belonging to the Munda group and recognized as a Scheduled Tribe by the Government of India.
- The Korku community is mostly found in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the adjoining Melghat region of Maharashtra.
- They speaks the Korku language, which is an endangered Austroasiatic Munda language generally written in the Devanagari script.
- The Korku community follows a traditional self-governance system known as Chavadi Swashasan.
