Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary

  • Kerala has inaugurated India’s first butterfly sanctuary by officially renaming the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary is located in Kannur, Kerala. It covers an area of 55 square kilometres, consisting of tropical and semi-evergreen forests.
  • The sanctuary is home to over 266 species of butterflies, accounting for more than 80% of Kerala’s butterfly population.
  • Many endemic butterfly species are supported by the sanctuary’s environment, making it a vital conservation site. From October to February, the sanctuary witnesses a spectacular butterfly migration.
