Corruption is the abuse of public office for private gain, which undermines good governance, economic development, and social justice. Transparency is the principle of governance where government decisions, policies, and actions are made publicly available.

Background / Current Context

In Transparency International's CPI 2024, India ranks 96th out of 180 countries (score 38/100), indicating a serious corruption situation. In 2023, the CVC investigated 1,178 corruption cases.

Major Causes

  • Weak legal framework and slow judicial processes.
  • Administrative red-tapism and excessive discretionary powers.
  • Political-bureaucratic nexus.
  • Lack of public awareness and social acceptance of corruption.
