The Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026
On 1st June 2026, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officially notified the Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026.
- The Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026 introduce changes to the existing Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025 to strengthen the regulation of the entry, stay, registration, and documentation of foreign nationals in India.
- The amendment primarily updates Rule 12 to align immigration administration with evolving border security requirements and digital governance systems.
Objectives
- Strengthen immigration monitoring and prevent illegal overstays.
- Eliminate the post-stay grace period previously available to short-term visa holders.
- Establish a structured and time-bound digital appeals mechanism.
