In December 2025, India’s food safety regulator began nationwide testing of egg samples after a viral video alleged the presence of a banned substance in eggs sold by a popular brand.

  • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India directed food safety officers to collect samples of both branded and unbranded eggs for analysis in laboratories across the country.
  • Nitrofurans are a group of synthetic antibiotics once used in food-producing animals but now banned due to their potential cancer-linked and genotoxic effects in humans.
