Geological Survey of India (GSI)
On 20th November 2025, Ministry of Coal & Mines inaugurated the International Seminar on “Unearthing the Past, Shaping the Future: 175 Years of GSI”, in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
- GSI was conceived as "Geological Survey of India" by John McClelland who initiated the appointment of David Hiraw Williams as the Geological Surveyor on February 5, 1846 by the East India Company.
- However, the appointment of Thomas Oldham as the new Geological Surveyor in 1851 marked the beginning of the functioning of the GSI.
- It is the second oldest survey body in India after Survey of India (founded in 1767).
