SC Strikes Down Key Provisions of the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021

On 19^th November 2025, the Supreme Court (SC) struck down provisions of the Tribunal Reforms Act of 2021, a law designed to alter the tribunal system and give the Union Government a dominant role in appointments and functioning, and even fixing the salaries of chairpersons and members.

• The petitioners challenged the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021, asserting that key provisions regarding appointments, tenure, qualifications, and service conditions of Tribunal Members and Chairpersons were unconstitutional.
• It was contended that the Act violated fundamental principles of separation of powers and judicial independence.
