Cell Broadcast System for Emergency Alerts
On 2nd May 2026, the Centre launched the Cell Broadcast System (CBS) to strengthen India’s emergency communication and disaster management infrastructure.
- The system was developed indigenously by Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) under the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
What is Cell Broadcast System (CBS)?
- Technology used to send emergency alerts directly to mobile phones within a specific geographic area.
- Enables simultaneous delivery of warning messages to large populations.
- Works through mobile network cell towers instead of individual phone numbers.
