India Commissions Third SSBN ‘Aridhaman’
On 3rd April 2026, India commissioned its third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridhaman, in Visakhapatnam, strengthening its strategic deterrence capability.
- SSBNs (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear submarines) are nuclear-powered submarines capable of launching ballistic missiles.
- INS Aridhaman is more advanced and powerful than its predecessors, INS Arihant and INS Arighat.
- With this, India reinforces its nuclear triad capability, the ability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea.
- India joins a select group of nations including the US, Russia, UK, France, and China possessing nuclear-powered submarines.
