India’s Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) Achieves Criticality
On 6th April 2026, India’s 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu achieved first criticality, marking a major milestone in the country’s nuclear energy programme.
What is Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR)?
- An advanced nuclear reactor that produces more fuel than it consumes.
- Developed by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research.
- Has a capacity of 500 MWe (megawatt electrical).
- Part of India’s three-stage nuclear programme.
