Mission MITRA Launched to Study Human Factors for Space Missions

From 2 to 9 April 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation conducted Mission MITRA (Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment) in Leh, Ladakh, to study crew performance, psychological resilience, and adaptability under high-altitude conditions simulating human spaceflight environments.

What is Mission MITRA?

  • A human spaceflight analog mission.
  • Studies physiological, psychological and operational behaviour.
  • Focus on gaganyatris (astronauts) and ground teams.

Where is the Mission Conducted?

  • Location: Leh, Ladakh.
  • Altitude: ~3,500 metres.
  • Simulates:
    • Hypoxia (low oxygen),
    • Low temperatures, and
    • Isolation conditions.

Objectives of the Mission

  • Assess crew performance under stress.
  • Study team coordination and decision-making.
  • Analyse human factors in extreme environments.
