India has entered a new phase of monetary innovation with the introduction of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), officially known as the Digital Rupee (e₹). Issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the e₹ represents the digital form of India’s sovereign currency and carries the same legal status and guarantee as physical cash. The CBDC initiative aligns India’s monetary system with the evolving digital economy while preserving the core attributes of currency: trust, stability, and finality of settlement.
