GenomeIndia Project
The GenomeIndia Project is a pan-India initiative focused on Whole Genome Sequencing of representative populations across the country to create a comprehensive ‘Genetic Grid’ of India.
The Concept
It involved identifying the unique genetic variations of 10,000 Indian individuals to build an indigenous "Reference Genome" tailored to the Indian population.
The Method & Technology
- Sample Collection: Blood or tissue samples are collected from diverse ethnic, linguistic, and geographical groups across India.
- DNA Extraction & Sequencing: Using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), the entire DNA sequence (all 3 billion base pairs) of each individual is read simultaneously.
