Kerala Gets Its First Butterfly Sanctuary

  • Recently, the Kerala Government officially renamed the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary as the Aralam Butterfly Sanctuary,” making it the first butterfly sanctuary in the state.
  • The government issued a notification (SRO No. 1407/2025) under Section 18(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, amending the earlier 1984 notification.
  • Located in Kannur district, the sanctuary covers an area of 55 square kilometres and is dominated by evergreen and semi-evergreen forests.
  • It shares boundaries with Karnataka’s Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary, and the North Wayanad Forest Division.
