Post-harvest Tech
Post-harvest technology involves a range of scientific techniques applied to agricultural produce after harvest for its protection, processing, and packaging. It utilizes physical, chemical, and biological interventions to arrest the metabolic activity of harvested crops, thereby preventing decay and nutrient loss.
Technologies at Work
- Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP): This technology alters the air composition inside a package (increasing and decreasing ). This slows down the respiration rate of fruits and vegetables, extending their shelf-life.
- Food Irradiation: Produce is exposed to ionizing radiation (gamma rays or X-rays). This process kills foodborne bacteria, parasites, and insects, and inhibits sprouting in crops like ....
