Rafah Crossing
Following Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip after the October 7 attack by Hamas, the Rafah border crossing with Egypt became essential for people entering or leaving Gaza.
- The Rafah crossing is not under Israel's control. Egypt controls the crossing but imports through the Rafah crossing require Israeli approval.
- Egypt, however, kept the Rafah crossing closed since October 10, 2023 leading to diplomatic negotiations to allow the passage of individuals and supplies.
- The situation escalated as Israel carried out ground invasion of Gaza, and living conditions in the Strip worsened due to Israeli airstrikes.
