India Urges Action on Seafarer Abandonment at IMO
At the 132nd session of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London (8-12 July, 2024), India called for decisive measures to tackle seafarer abandonment and ensure maritime workforce safety.
- India, which is a member of the IMO Council representing countries with significant interest in international seaborne trade, highlighted the urgent need for solutions to seafarer abandonment.
- The delegation reported that despite ongoing efforts, there are currently 44 active cases involving 292 Indian seafarers.
- India’s strong call for effective measures and oversight in addressing these issues was positively received by the IMO Council members.
