Legal Person Status to Animals
- On 2nd June, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that all animals are legal persons entitled to legal rights like human beings.
- The verdict comes nearly a year after Uttarakhand High Court passed a similar order to protect and promote greater welfare of animals.
Need for Such Move
- Various animals in India are subjected to cruelty and ill treatment in the name of religion, culture, sports, etc.
- For example, bulls are tortured during the famous Jallikuttu race in Tamil Nadu, elephants are ill-treated during the Thrissur pooram festival held in Kerala etc.
