UNESCO Launches First Ocean Decade Actions
On the eve of World Oceans Day on 8th June, 2021, UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) announced the first Actions officially endorsed as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, 2021-2030.
Context of the Ocean Decade
- The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Ocean Decade (UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, 2021-2030) in 2017.
- It seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem.
