Office of CJI Comes Under the Purview of RTI Act

On 13^th November 2019, the five-member Constitution bench of Supreme Court (SC) held that office of the Chief Justice of India is a public authority under the Right to Information Act.

Supreme Court Judgement

• In its unanimous verdict on 13^th November 2019, the SC stated that transparency does not undermine judicial independence while upholding the Delhi High Court judgment which ruled that office of the Chief Justice is a public authority under sections 2(h) of the RTI Act 2005.
• This will enable the disclosure of information such as the judges’ personal assets.
