Re-Nomination to Rajya Sabha
Recently, former journalist Swapan Dasgupta, who had resigned from Rajya Sabha, has been renominated to the upper house of parliament by the government to complete his remainder term.
- This has created a constitutional debate as whether the renomination is constitutional or not.
Constitution on Re-Nomination
- Article 80(1)(a) of the Constitution, read with Article 80(3), provides that the President can nominate to the Rajya Sabha 12 persons having special knowledge or practical experience in the fields of literature, science, art and social service.
