Multi-drug Resistant Yeast Present in India since 2011

  • A Multi-drug resistant yeast Candida auris (C. auris), which the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently warned can cause invasive infection and death, has been around in India since 2011.
  • Almost 90 per cent of its fungal isolates were found to be resistant to fluconazole, the standard antifungal drug in many countries and it is also developing resistance to other anti-fungal drugs.

  • C. auris is a yeast-like fungus related to Candida albicans.
  • It was first described as a pathogen in 2009 when isolated from a patient with an ear infection in Japan.
