Supreme Court Collegium in the Line of Fire
The Supreme Court collegium’s recent decision of revoking the promotion of two High Court judges to the apex court has created controversy, renewing the debate to abolish this system.
What was the Issue?
The collegium decided to appoint Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, by retracting and superseding its own earlier selections.Justice Maheshwari was earlier rejected by the Collegium in its December 2018 meeting. Justice Khanna has been selected over his three senior colleagues, Justices Pradeep Nandrajog, Gita Mittal and S Ravindra Bhat.
