  • India has sent a formal request for consideration of its eight beaches by international jury for the coveted International eco-label called as the Blue Flag certification under Blue Flag Programme.
  • The Blue Flag beaches are considered the cleanest beaches of the world.

Blue Flag Programme

  • The Blue Flag Programme is operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education, headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark and seeks to promote sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas.
  • It challenges local authorities and beach operators to achieve high standards in the four categories of:
      1. Water Quality,
      2. Environmental Management,
      3. Environmental Education and
      4. Safety.
