Centre Moots Law to Amend Regulation of Agricultural Seeds
The Ministry of Agriculture has prepared an amendment law to the Seeds Act, 1966 recently.
Features of the Amendment
- It aims to bring uniformity to the process of seed quality regulation.
- The current law provides for regulation of the quality of ‘certain’ seeds for sale. The new Bill removes the word “certain”, and aims to regulate the quality of all seeds sold in the country, as well as exported and imported seeds.
- It would mandate uniform certification of all seeds through a proper lab process and also software based barcoding of all seeds to ensure their traceability.
