- It was founded by Raja Ram Mohan Roy, it sought to purge Hinduism of the abuses that had crept into it.
- It focused on reinterpretation of Hindu doctrines and found ample spiritual basis for his humanitarianism in the Upanishads.
- It launched campaigns for the abolition of Sati, child marriage, female infanticide, etc. as well as condemned polygamy and practice of keeping concubines and advocated the rights of Hindu widows to remarry.
