Subsidiary Alliance System of Wellesley (1798)
- Wellesley was wary of the possibilities of emergence of powerful and Independent Indian state which could also enter in treaty with their arch rival i.e. the French. To nullify any such threat, he introduced the system of subsidiary alliance.
- Actually, it was the French governor Duplex who first employed a similar system under which the local Indian kingdoms were promised protection in lieu of a payment. But, Wellesley developed it as a policy and applied it very systematically to increase Company’s power.
