The Revolt Of Peasant Movements
a. Indigo Revolt(1859-1860)
- Major reason was that peasants were deliberately forced to grow indigo against their choice of rice and price paid to them was much lower than the market price.
- Even advance money was given to peasants to compel them to grow indigo, which create vicious cycle known as Khurki system.
- Din Bandhu Mitra's play, 'Neel Darpan' made this revolt famous.
- Inquiry commission was set up by govt. in 1860 and order was issued that ryots could not be compelled to sow Indigo and all disputes will be settled by legal means.
b. Pabna Revolt (1870-80)
