SMILE Scheme
On 12th February, 2022, the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment launched the Central Sector scheme “SMILE: Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise”.
Aim
- To provide welfare measures to the transgender community and the people engaged in the act of begging.
Need
- Beggary is a complex socio-economic problem in Indian society.
- Beggars are the most vulnerable section of society trapped in destitution, deprivation and helplessness.
- They lack basic livelihood opportunities and face severe forms of social exclusion.
- In this age of smart cities, beggary is considered as a social evil engendering public health, decency and law and order issues ....
