Child Marriage
On 3rd February, 2023, the Assam Police launched a statewide crackdown on child marriages.
- The men who married girls below 14 years of age would be booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).
- Those marrying girls between the age of 14 and 18 years would be booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA), 2006.
Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006
- This Act replaced the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929 which was enacted during the British era.
- It defines a child to mean a male below 21 years and female below 18 years.
