Amendment to Water Act, 1974
On 5th February 2024, the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Bill, 2024, passed through both parliamentary houses within 72 hours, sparking controversy among environmental experts.
Features of the Amendments
- Expansion of Legislative Authority: The amended Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 2024, extends legislative influence over water management, permitting the Centre to enact laws if requested by two or more States, with adoption by state assemblies enabling applicability within their jurisdictions.
