Answer: After the battles of Plassey and Buxar, British dominance was established over Bengal and the entire region of Bihar. The aim of this colonial control was the indiscriminate exploitation of Bihar's economic resources. Along with this economic exploitation, the British also implemented the policy of "Divide and Rule," which disrupted the social fabric of Bihar, fostering animosity and division.
Economic Changes
- Zamindari System: In 1793, the Permanent Settlement was implemented across Bengal, including Bihar, introducing the Zamindari System. This system made the peasants (raiyat) landless, as the zamindars were granted control over land revenue collection.
