Panama’s Withdrawal from BRI
- On 7th February 2025, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister summoned Panama’s Ambassador after the country decided not to renew its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) agreement.
- China accused the United States of pressuring Panama to withdraw, claiming that US actions reveal its “hegemonic nature.”
- Panama’s decision comes after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit, although President Jose Raul Mulino denied that the US influenced the move.
