NGT Clears Great Nicobar Island Mega-infrastructure Project
On 16th February 2026, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) upheld the environmental clearance for the Great Nicobar mega infrastructure project, citing its economic and strategic significance for India.
What is Great Nicobar Project?
- It is a planned mega-infrastructure project for the southern tip of India's Great Nicobar Island, in the Andaman Sea.

- To transform Great Nicobar Island into a major economic and strategic hub.

- Situated in Great Nicobar Island, close to the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
