SC Asks FSSAI to Consider Warning Labels on Packaged Foods
Recently, the Supreme Court asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to consider introducing mandatory front-of-package warning labels (FOPL) on packaged food products high in sugar, salt and saturated fat.
- The court observed that such regulatory measures are essential to safeguard citizens’ right to health.
- FSSAI is a statutory body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
- FSSAI performs the following functions:
- Framing of Regulations to lay down the Standards and guidelines in relation to articles of food and specifying appropriate system of enforcing various standards thus notified.
