Self-Help Groups
The Government has prioritised the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), aimed at raising the annual income of each woman in self-help groups (SHGs) to Rs 1 lakh by 2024. Under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, 7.7 crore women have been mobilised into 70 lakh SHGs.
About Self-Help Groups (SHGs)
- SHGs are informal associations of people who come together to find ways to improve their living conditions. They are generally self-governed and peer-controlled.
- The genesis of SHG in India can be traced to formation of Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in 1970.
