Democracy Index 2024

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released the Democracy Index 2024 in February 2025.

The index assesses the state of democracy in 165 countries and 2 territories across five categories, highlighting global trends and regime classifications.

The Index assigns countries a score on a 0 to 10 scale based on five key categories:

  1. Electoral process and pluralism,
  2. Functioning of government,
  3. Political participation,
  4. Political culture, and
  5. Civil liberties.

Based on performance in these categories, each country is classified into one of four regime types:

  1. Full democracy;
  2. Flawed democracy;
  3. Hybrid regime; and
  4. Authoritarian regime.
