India–World Bank Cooperation

India’s collaboration with the World Bank began in 1944 with the establishment of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). At the Bretton Woods Conference in June 1944, India played an active role as one of the 44 participating countries. In fact, the name "International Bank for Reconstruction and Development" was proposed based on India’s suggestion. Since then, India has become one of the World Bank Group’s largest partners.

  • Currently, the World Bank’s India program includes 104 projects with a total commitment of approximately $27.1 billion USD.
