World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nations' primary health agency. It is an intergovernmental body that generally works through the health ministries of its member states. WHO’s core functions include providing global health leadership, setting health research agendas, establishing norms and standards, offering evidence-based policy options, delivering technical assistance, and monitoring global health trends.

  • India became a WHO member on January 12, 1948. The first Regional Committee Meeting for Southeast Asia was held in India on October 4–5, 1948, inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
  • India is an active member of WHO’s Southeast Asia Region.
