The World Press Freedom Index 2025, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in May 2025.
The Index evaluates press freedom in 180 countries by assessing political, legal, economic, socio-cultural, and safety conditions affecting journalism.
Methodology
The index evaluates five key dimensions:
- Political Context: Measures political influence on media operations and editorial independence.
- Legal Framework: Assesses protections and legal threats to journalism.
- Economic Context: Evaluates the financial stability of media outlets and ownership concentration.
- Sociocultural Context: Considers societal attitudes and pressures on journalists.
- Safety of Journalists: Analyzes physical threats, violence, and impunity for crimes against journalists.
