Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Shield

On 10-11th June 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully completed the final development trials of India's multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, demonstrating the capability to intercept long-range ballistic missiles in both exo-atmospheric and endo-atmospheric phases.

What is Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD)?

  • Multi-layered missile defence system designed to: Detect, track, and destroy incoming ballistic missiles before impact.
  • Operates in two layers:
    1. Endo-atmospheric interception (within Earth's atmosphere).
    2. Exo-atmospheric interception (outside Earth's atmosphere).
  • Comprises: Interceptor missiles, long-range tracking radars, Launch Control Centres (LCC), Mission Control Centre (MCC), and secure communication networks.
